School Food Programs
Local Farms + Local Chefs = Nutritious School Meals
We are working hard to connect local ingredients with local chefs to provide nourishing school meals for our community. By providing fresh, nutrient dense and seasonal foods, these programs encourage healthy eating habits. By working with local farmers and chefs we are building strong community connections, supporting our local economy and building a resilient local food supply chain.
Local Ingredients + School Meals
Local Harvest Breakfast Program with Rocky Mountain School District and Ethos Cafe
In partnership with the Rocky Mountain School District and Ethos Cafe, we’ve launched a pilot program offering grab & go breakfast items made with local ingredients in the three elementary schools in Golden one day a week. The school district is directing Feeding Futures funding to augment the existing “Breakfast Club” program in Golden’s schools. These breakfasts are free and available to all students, and an amazing initiative to make sure all students are starting the day in the most successful way possible!
Local Lunch Program with Alexander Park Elementary Parent Advisory Committee
This school year the APES PAC and Local Food Matters have teamed up to re-vamp the Hot Lunch program to feature nutritious meals, made with local ingredients by local chefs. Students at APES have been introduced to different vegetables grown in our local area, while exploring a new lunch menu at the end of the week! Parents sign their kids for these lunches at the beginning of each school session, and the APES PAC & Local Food Matters ensure affordable access to all families by offering subsidies to those who find cost a barrier. Our chef partners are building relationships with local farmers to include seasonal ingredients and the parent volunteers serving lunches are sharing the story of local food with the students each week.
